Today, Beidou Junior High School hosted a guest speaker, William Godmuller, a junior from Harvard University studying astronomy. He shared his passion and work with class 902. He shared his journey which started with a childhood love for the night sky and grew into a passion for astrophotography. He presented examples such as the Crescent Nebula and the Pillars of Creation.
William also discussed his advanced research on gravitational lensing, highlighting the surprising finding of more big galaxy clusters than expected. He encouraged the junior high school students to engage in astronomy activities such as the National Rocket Competition or starting an astronomy club.
He stressed the necessity of learning English as all astronomy research is conducted in that language. He recommended watching English TV and listening to English music as a way to learn. Williams ultimate goal is to attend graduate school and eventually become an astronomy professor. William's talk really inspired the students. After his talk, the students felt motivated to pursue their own interests in science and William promised to share some of his stunning astrophotography photos with the class.
